Picnic and canvassing in Millersport

Where
Millersport

When
Jul 22, 2006   10:30 am - 1:30 pm

Supporters of the Fairfield County Democratic Party will be walking door-to-door in Millersport on July 22nd, 2006 in support of our local and statewide candidates. We will meet at the Upper Deck Coffee House in downtown Millersport at 10:30 to begin our canvassing activities. After we finish canvassing, we will meet at 12:30 PM for a picnic lunch at the shelter in the Lions Club Park (i.e. where the Sweet Corn Festival takes place.) For festival afficionados, it's the booth where the Millersport Athletic Boosters have their stand. We encourage all local Dems to come out and support the effort and enjoy the food afterwards. We encourage people to bring a side-dish or desert to share. It would also help to email us letting us know what you plan to bring. Watch this space as the event nears for additional details about meeting times and locations. Another such event will be held in the northwest corner of the county in August. An open letter to Millersport (and other Fairfield County) Democrats As the Millersport representative on the Central and Executive Committees of the Fairfield County Democratic Party, I want to thank you for your past support of Democratic candidates and ask for your active participation in this year’s campaigns. We’ve seen what Republican elected officials have done to our county, our state and our nation. It’s time for a reenergized Democratic Party to prevail with candidates who can take Fairfield County and Ohio in a better direction. We’ve got a great slate of candidates for local and state offices. We saw in last fall’s Lancaster City Council elections that good organization and hard work pay off with success at the polls. The stakes are even higher in this fall’s elections. We need every Democrat – as well as Republican and Independent voters who are ready for change – to get involved. There’s a way for everyone to contribute to success in November. Here are some ideas for ways to get started: 1. Visit and bookmark the Fairfield County Democrats’ informative website at ffcdp.net. 2. Join fellow Democrats to canvass in Millersport on July 22. Starting at 10:30 am we’ll be walking through Millersport to distribute literature about our candidates. I canvassed here and elsewhere in the county during the Kerry campaign, and I can tell you that it’s a great way to get exercise and visit with neighbors. Don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes. Look for more information about this canvassing opportunity on the website, or give me a call to let me know you’ll participate. 3. Following canvassing, attend the July 22 picnic sponsored by the Education and Outreach Committee of the Fairfield County Democratic Party. We’ll gather around 2:00 pm at the picnic shelter at Lions Club Park. This is the shelter that Millersport Athletic Boosters use for their booth during the Sweet Corn Festival. Bring a dish to share, if you can. If you can’t, come anyway. And even if you can’t participate in canvassing, please join us for good food and fellowship at the picnic. 4. Get to know our local and state candidates for office:
  • Dennis Lupher, for State Senator
  • Kelly Kirk, for State Representative
  • George Hallarn, for County Commissioner
  • Peter Kukla, for County Clerk of Courts
  • Ted Strickland and Lee Fisher, for Governor and Lieutenant Governor
  • Mark Dann, for Ohio Attorney General
  • Jennifer Brunner, for Ohio Secretary of State
  • Barbara Sykes, for Ohio Auditor
  • Richard Cordray, for Ohio Treasurer
5. Mark your calendar now for the September 9 fundraiser for the Strickland campaign. This exciting event will be in Lancaster, at a location to be announced. Start saving now for your $50 ticket. 6. Put a Strickland bumper sticker on your vehicle to spread name recognition wherever you go. 7. Get and wear a Strickland/Fisher shirt or button, and be ready to talk to anyone who comments on it about what our candidates will do for Ohio. Mike Oatney is our local chair for the Strickland campaign. He can get us shirts. Let me know if you want one. 8. Contribute to a political campaign. Republicans usually beat us in fundraising. It’s time to close the money gap. 9. Keep campaign materials at home and in your car, ready to hand out wherever you go. 10. Identify friends and neighbors who have good locations for yard signs and ask them if we can put a sign in their yard this fall. 11. Pledge at least one Saturday between Labor Day and Election Day to canvass for Democratic candidates. 12. Start composing a letter to the Editor of the Beacon, the Eagle-Gazeette or the Dispatch, in support of a candidate for local or state office. 13. Talk to friends, family, neighbors and coworkers about the upcoming election and make sure they’re registered to vote. 14. Talk with everyone you know about why we need Democratic leadership now, to replace favoritism for some with fairness for all – a living wage, accessible health care and quality education for all children. 15. Think Blue. This is going to be our year! I encourage you to pick at least one idea from this list and do it. If you have other ideas about how to get involved, I’d love to hear them. You can reach me by phone at 467-9017 or by email at leah@avolve.net. I hope to see you on July 22, September 9, and many other times between now and November.
