Introduction to the Education and Outreach Committee for the Fairfield County Democrats

The following is a brief history of our group and how we came to exist.

Prior to the 2004 Election, many people wanted to help elect Kerry (and other Democrats!!), but we had trouble finding out what was going on and who was doing what in the County, since some of us had not very been involved before. During that time, we found out there were more committed Democrats and undeclared voters here in Fairfield County than we were aware of. That is, we found many like-minded individuals who were concerned about families (middle and lower class families, not just rich families), a good working wage, and values based on tolerance and compassion.

Shortly after the election, a group of us met and decided that we needed to build on what had been started during the campaign. Some members began attending the Democrat Central Committee and Democrat Club meetings and expressed our desire to continue working toward electing more Democrat candidates on a local, state and national level. With the support of the Democrat Executive Committee, we were named the Education and Outreach Committee of the Fairfield County Democratic Party. We are different from the Democrat Club since their mission is defined as a Ways and Means group for the Party, which means their goal is to raise funds for the Party.

Our goal, as defined by our approved mission statement, is to develop a coalition of like-minded Democrats and undeclared voters who are willing to work to provide education and outreach within the county to help elect Democratic candidates. To achieve this, the committee will provide opportunities for discussion of relevant issues, work to maximize visibility of the Democratic Party within Fairfield County, and seek to unite those who are of a similar viewpoint with the objective of electing qualified Democratic candidates in the county, state , and nation.

Since January 2005, we have linked up with the State Party established a web-presence which provides local news and information to Democrats in Fairfield County, created a Business Outreach Committee, and a Volunteer Committee. We have people involved at many levels: helping with the Website, both in terms of tech support and content; outreach in the community (which if you are reading this is the reason you are here...someone told you about us) and learning what other committed individuals are willing to do to help in future efforts. In February 2005, we coordinated a canvass campaign to gather the signatures of people opposed to HB 1, whcih Governor Taft signed this into law. This law raised the amount the contributors can make in campaigns and lowers the age one has to be to contribute. It allows an 8 year old child to contribute $10,000 annually to campaigns.

During the remainder of 2005, we helped the Democratic candidates in Lancaster regain control of the City Council for the first time since the 1970's.

We are open and want to involve more people who are concerned with the direction the nation, state, and county are headed under the direction of the Republicans. Know your presence and your voice are welcome.
